It’s advisable for you to rent a car if you’re visiting Dubai for a holiday. If you are a business visitor, it depends on where you will visit in Dubai or the UAE, whether you need a car or not. But, if you hire a taxi for every location you’ll visit within Dubai and also the UAE, it could be cost-effective – approx over $200 you have to spend. And, if you rent a car it would be $20/day (plus fuel charges), it depends on which model you choose.
Dubai taxis are very expensive. You’ll have to pay over 50AED ($13) for 20KM distance. And, if you are going to Abu Dhabi you’ll be charged more than 750AED ($204) for a return trip. Taxis are not a wise choice in Dubai since it is very very expensive.
It’s true that Dubai has public transport system includes metro with 49stations, but it doesn’t cover the entire Dubai city. Other public transportation such as buses, taxis, monorails, trams, and ferries, the RTA public bus could get you everywhere you want to go. But it has its schedule and its routine. Except for taxis, other means of transport are not available everywhere in the city you want to go, and taxis are expensive modes of transportation.
Nevertheless, if you’re willing to travel through metro or other public transport systems then get your NFC enabled NOL card at the customer service office of the bus or train stations, these cards will help you to pay bus fares, train fares, etc… since RTA suburban buses have no ticketing system. When you don’t need the NOL card, you could get it refunded except its one-time issuing fees.
Practically, you will need a car if you know how to drive and have an International Driving License. There are many rental agencies in Dubai, you could find them at Airport. But, if you’re looking for a car with affordable price than search on the Internet rather than hiring at the airport, you could be able to book in $20/day for the primary car. For the Internet, there is free WiFi at the airport. But, you will need prepaid data SIM card for GPS navigation to drive a car through your device which is also expensive in Dubai, if you can afford data SIM card prices only for a car in Dubai than only it is advisable to rent a car in Dubai.
Get your hotel booking with a Wi-Fi service because data charges in the UAE are very high on PrePaid SIM cards. If you’re looking for accommodation in the residential building for rent, you should make sure that the Wi-Fi service is available there. Additionally, you’re able to access free Wi-Fi in many malls (i.e. Dubai Mall) and cafes in Dubai.
According to Khaleej Times, you can drive in UAE with a license from the following countries:
Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.
Driving license holders of some countries as mentioned list will require translations or consulate letters. For Canada, a letter from the Canadian Consulate in Dubai to verify that the license is genuine is required.
